Media: NYU Stream Auto-Captioning

Introduction

NYU Stream supports machine auto-generated captioning and transcription in various languages. Captioning is an excellent and needed practice for accessibility. Auto-generated captions also produce a transcription, which allows participants to search for and revisit keywords. Please, be aware NYU Stream captioning accuracy can vary between 80% - 90%. However, NYU Stream has editing capabilities and consider the tips to improve accuracy below.

How Create Auto Captions

  • Sign In to NYU Stream 
  • Navigate to and select your name in the top-right corner.
  • Select “My Media”.
  • Search and select your video. 
  • Select the “Actions” dropdown list.
  • Select “+ Caption & Enrich” from the list.

 

  • Select the caption’s language from the “Source Media Language''. English is the option by default.
    • Note that all other settings can remain the same.
  • Select “Submit” and captions will process. 
    • A transcription will also be available to download and appears in embedded NYU Stream videos in Brightspace.

 

How to Edit Captions

  • Sign In to NYU Stream 
  • Navigate to and select your name in the top-right corner.
  • Select “My Media’.
  • Search and select your video. 
  • Select the “Actions” dropdown list.
  • Select “Edit” from the list.
  • Select “Captions”.
    • Note the accuracy percentage is under the “Accuracy” column.
  • Select “Edit captions”.

  • Make any edits to the captions.
  • Select “Save” in the top-right corner when you’re finished.

 

Tips to Improve Captions’ Accuracy

  • Eliminate background noise.
  • Prepare a script.
  • Practice reading the script.
  • Try to speak clearly (take your time).
  • Double check any esoteric or key terms. Use the caption edit feature to search and update any incorrect wording.
  • If you have time, consider watching your video, note all caption mistakes, and make corrections.
